That’d be an Ed Brown Hardcore Extractor and Firing Pin Stop, and a copy of Scott Phillips’ Rut, free from Concord Press. Meaning, next week’s shaping up nicely. Especially since, on my last pass through the local big box grocery/ammunition store, I noticed boxes and boxes of .45 ACP. Of course, I’ve got a short story and an article that both need finished, and there’s that damn book, but I’m also taking some time for reading and shooting.
Speaking of which, one of my favorite gun bloggers, Tamara K., left this comment on my post about dropping my carry gun:
It makes me happy that my CCW gun is all scuffed and worn and beat to heck from years of hard use.
A fightin’ handgun that looks too pristine is a mite too much like Minnie Pearl’s hat to me.
All I can say to that is: yep.

loved RUT
RUT was a big win for me too. And somehow I managed to get a copy of The Blue Press catalog in the mail yesterday. Nothing like a hot chick on the cover of a catalog pitching guns and ammo!
Hey! I got Rut in the mail but I did not get gun stuff. I want a crossbow.
Yeah, I can’t wait to read it. Got LATE RAIN up first, but I’ll be starting that today.
And the worst thing is that when I get one of those catalogs and flip through ‘em, it’s only about a half hour in that I realize there are women in the pictures. The rest of time, it’s “Jesus Christ, look at the grips on that 1911.”
And I thought about a crossbow, Michelle. But they’re hell to conceal.
Got mine last week. Have only had time to stand over it and drool.
that IS a crossbow in my pocket
Late Rain is a terrific read, Ben. I got a friend who is gonna’ love your love of guns (hopefully your books as well). Just forwarded him a link to your blog today. The Doc loves him some guns and is my go to guy for all things gun related. I screwed up big time in my first few books with very inaccurate descriptions of weapons (except for Louisville sluggers–those I know). Anyway, he’ll appreciate what you got in the mail (the gun stuff for sure).
Thanks, Charlie. I’m a novice, just got my carry permit about eight months ago, and for some reason got it in my head to build a dream carry gun from a Springfield GI Mil-Spec 1911. (I’m not doing anything that means cutting the frame or slide — I’ll take that work to a gunsmith.) It’s a lot of fun, but, y’know, if I was suggesting a carry gun to somebody else I’d probably just tell ‘em to get a Glock.
Traded my crossbow for a Ruger .458, years ago. Great fun, but then I swapped the .458 (and a piece of shit Uzi) for a Chevy Luv. Blew the engine on the Luv coming over Loveland Pass in the middle of the night. Had to walk all the way to G’town.
True story.
Don’t miss the Luv. Don’t miss the Uzi. Don’t miss the crossbow, either.
But the .458?
(sigh)
Sorry for your loss, RW.
Meanwhile, folks, what’s a RUT??? Will it go bang?
LATE RAIN was one of my favorite releases this year. Anything Kostoff writes, I”ll read. Got RUT a couple of weeks back, but have got a couple in the TBR before I crack it.
Yeah, I’m about 1oo pages in to LATE RAIN, and I have no complaints. It’s a hell of a book, and I have the feeling it hasn’t quite broken open yet.
